Online CV templates
I sometimes get inquiries from people asking if I can provide them with a CV template. Whilst there are plenty of CV templates available online, here are some issues to think through before using them.
Are they a CV template or a resume template
Many of them are not templates for a CV, but for a resume. Generally speaking, a resume format is not used in New Zealand.
Its all about content
Curriculum Vitae template might be well structured and look good, but what you type into it is the most important issue. If you are going to use a CV template to write your own CV, you have to have a very good idea of what your strengths and achievements are. CV template or no CV template, most people really struggle to do that.
When clients hire me to write their professional CV, the last thing I think about is their CV template. I spend up to an hour interviewing the client to unearth skills and experiences that even they hadn’t really thought of. The interview gives me a back bone for the client’s CV; then, I painstakingly put the meat on that backbone. I push people whom are far too humble for a competitive job market; into places I know they are capable of going to. I give people who were unsure of themselves a new-found confidence. I polish rough diamonds so they really sparkle. Sure, sometimes there are a couple of changes when I present their CV, but we always have a far more competitive product than we would have had without me adding my unique value.
Yes, I do use CV templates
I do have a set of Curriculum Vitae templates I use, but that is that last thing my clients are interested in. Why? Because they understand it is all about competitive and quality content…not a pretty format.
If you are looking for a quality CV, and you fully understand your skills, achievements and how to sell yourself, then a Curriculum Vitae template might be the right way to go. If not, you are taking a huge risk.
Why paint by numbers when your unique masterpiece is so affordable?
